How to Catch Indo-Pacific King Mackerel at Noomaa Kuda Atholhu (Fishing Planet Guide)

The Indo-Pacific King Mackerel was one of the first fish I chased at Noomaa Kuda Atholhu, the tropical atoll map, and it takes a fast pilker jig rather than bait on the bottom. It is an active, hard-hitting pelagic that hunts in small schools, so once you find the right water you can often pick up more than one. My catch was a Common at 2.287 kg and 51.1 cm, worth 590 coins and 195 XP on a single hook pilker. This guide covers the pilker rig, the spot, the timing, and honest expectations.

What to Expect: A Fast Pelagic, Not a Big Earner

Let me be honest about the numbers first. My Common Indo-Pacific King Mackerel paid 590 coins and 195 XP, which is small. The species reaches around 5 kg and beyond, and mine was a 2.287 kg Common, so a Trophy or Unique would be heavier and pay more. If you are here to grind coins, this is not the fish for it.

The reason to fish it is the style. This is a running, jigging fish that hits a moving pilker and then leaps and thrashes on the line, which is a completely different feel from sitting bait on the bottom. It is also an easy species tick and a good way to learn the water around this atoll. Treat it as active, fun fishing and an easy addition to your list, not a payday.

This is the first fish in my Noomaa Kuda Atholhu cluster. As I add more species from this map, I will link them here so you can move between the guides.

About the Indo-Pacific King Mackerel

Indo-Pacific King Mackerel in-game info and preferred baits and lures in Fishing Planet

The Indo-Pacific King Mackerel (Scomberomorus guttatus) is a medium-sized member of the mackerel family found in the warm waters of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. It reaches up to 5 kg and beyond, and prefers coastal water at depths of roughly 15 to 80 metres. It travels in small schools, feeding on sardines, anchovies, squid, and the occasional crustacean, and it is active both day and night, so there is no bad time to go after it.

The one warning that matters for landing it: once hooked, this fish loves to leap and thrash. That changes how you fight it compared to a calm bottom fish. Its preferred lures include Pilkers, Bucktails, Trolling Octopuses, Trolling Skirts, Crankbaits, Saltwater Spoons, and Minnows, and its preferred baits include Finger Mullets, Split Tail Mullet, Japanese Jack Mackerel, Small Flying Fish, Scaled Sardines, and Japanese Anchovy. I went with a pilker, which is the simplest and most direct way in.

Level and License: What You Need to Fish Here

Noomaa Kuda Atholhu is a Level 94 map, so you need to reach level 94 before you can fish it at all. There are two starting points, Maahuraa Lagoon and Kuda Veli, and I launched from Maahuraa Lagoon for this catch. One detail worth knowing before you target this fish: on the Basic License, Trophy and Unique Indo-Pacific King Mackerel must be released, and boat fishing is not allowed. If you want to keep a Trophy or Unique, or fish from a boat the way I did, you need the Advanced License, which allows boats and has no keep restrictions. I was on the Advanced License for this trip.

Where to Catch Indo-Pacific King Mackerel at Noomaa Kuda Atholhu

I marked and caught mine near coordinates -1021.71, -214.84, out in the open water off Maahuraa Lagoon. This is a coastal pelagic, so fish the open water around the atoll rather than tight against the shore, and let the pilker work through the water column. Drop a marker buoy as soon as you get a bite, because these fish move in small schools and you can often pick up more from the same patch of water before they pass through.

Timing: Late Evening Worked, and It Bites Day or Night

I caught mine at 19:45 on Day 4, in the late evening, at 29 degrees with clear weather and a light NE breeze at 4.4 m/s. Since the game lists this fish as active both day and night, you are not locked to one window, but still check the activity chart before you settle in, because the bite rate rises and falls through the day. Use Forward Time to reach a stronger window if the water is quiet, and avoid Next Day, which sells your whole storage.

The Rig: A Light Pilker Jigging Setup

Unlike a bottom bait fish, the King Mackerel takes a lure rig: a rod, a reel, a line, and a pilker jig, with no separate leader, hook, or sinker, since the pilker carries its own hook and weight. This is the light setup that caught mine.

ComponentWhat I Used
RodMidgard 160 (saltwater spinning rod)
ReelLokasenna 22000
Main lineKaigen Fluoro 0.9 mm
LureSingle Hook Pilker 60 g, #4/0 (Green, 14 cm)

The Midgard 160 spinning rod is light gear, which is the right call for a fish this size, and the thin fluorocarbon line stays low-visibility in the clear atoll water. There is nothing heavy or complicated here. Cast the pilker out, let it sink, and work it back with a jigging retrieve so it darts and flutters like a fleeing baitfish.

The Lure: Single Hook Pilker 60 g

I caught mine on a green Single Hook Pilker, 60 g, #4/0, 14 cm long. Pilkers are oblong jigs with a front-placed centre of gravity, built for casting and vertical jigging, and they are a listed preferred lure for the King Mackerel. One honest note: the in-game description for this lure highlights Amberjacks, Trevallies, and Dogtooth Tunas, but that is the generic pilker blurb, and it worked cleanly on King Mackerel for me. Do not let that line put you off using it here.

Landing It

This is where the King Mackerel earns its reputation. Unlike a passive bottom fish, it leaps and thrashes once hooked, so keep steady tension on the line and do not give it slack, or it can throw the hook on a jump. At 2.287 kg on this rod it is not a hard fight, but stay on the drag through the runs. Once it tires you can lift it by hand, no crane needed.

Common Mistakes

Fishing it on the bottom. This is a pelagic fish that chases a moving lure. Sitting bait on the bottom is the wrong approach. Cast the pilker and work it back through the water column.

Giving slack line on a jump. The King Mackerel leaps and thrashes when hooked. Loose line during a jump is how you lose it. Keep the rod loaded and tension on.

Overloading the rig. This is a small to medium fish. You do not need heavy tackle. A light spinning setup like the Midgard 160 above is all it takes.

Expecting a payday from a Common. At 590 coins, a small Common is a species tick, not an earner. A Trophy or Unique pays more, but do not grind this fish for money.

Pressing Next Day. It sells your whole storage. Use Forward Time to move within the same day instead.
